I had no idea that Monday was the 446th birthday of William Shakespeare. Or at least the 446th anniversary of his baptism. Well, darn, then, I missed it. [...] It is the tragic drowning of two children from the small village that still underlies the life of that village thirty years later. [...] Have you seen any parallels in modern-day life between famous people and literary characters? [...] If you read no other books in celebration of Earth Day, these two should be the ones you read: Geography of Hope, and Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit. [...] My only hope is that TVOntario will pick them up some day. They love BBC programs. Until then, I can only languish and lament that I can’t watch The Beauty of Maps. [...] For a while, as you read Netherland, you feel like you’re kind of being drowned in cotton balls. [...] Lawrence Hill has done something wonderful here. You learn so much about the lives of the slaves, both those wrenched from Africa and those born in slavery in the Colonies, and you learn a great deal about the human spirit and what it’s capable of and can accomplish. [...] It’s really been a lot of fun so far. I love exploring book-related things — not just reviewing, but finding out fun tidbits, learning some history, whatever. [...] |
